DST vs PES vs EXP — Which Embroidery File Format Do You Need?

Upload the wrong embroidery file format and your machine simply won't read it. Different machine brands use different proprietary formats — and while they all contain similar stitch information, they are not interchangeable.

The Most Common Embroidery File Formats

DST — Tajima

DST is the industry standard for commercial embroidery. Originally developed by Tajima, it is accepted by most commercial and industrial machines. If you are unsure which format to request, DST is usually the safest choice.

PES — Brother / Babylock

PES is used by Brother and Babylock home and commercial embroidery machines. It stores stitch data along with color information.

EXP — Melco / Ameco

EXP is used by Melco and Ameco commercial embroidery machines — a commercial-grade format designed for production environments.

VP3 — Pfaff / Husqvarna Viking

VP3 is the format for Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking machines, including color and design information.

JEF — Janome / Elna

JEF is used by Janome and Elna embroidery machines.
